Catch a Ghost
I don't know what took me so long, but I'm glad to have read Kat's status updates and review of this book, since it made me bump it up on my TBR-list. (Thanks, Kat!) And I don't regret my decision, because I loved, loved, LOVED this book!I have read a few reviews and a lot of people compare this series to Cut & Run. Even though the similarities do exist, I'm not going to comment on that and I don't want to compare the two. I loved the Cut & Run series to death, and I'm going to enjoy Hell or High Water on its own, since it's only fair to do so.
Catch a Ghost is the first installment in the series. Let's meet the MCs then, shall we?
Prophet Drews, former Navy SEAL, former CIA spook, currently works for a private agency, Extreme Escapes, Ltd. Everyone knows he doesn't do partners, is a loner who's really good at his job and also, a major pain in the ass. Prophet doesn't follow any rules and gets away with a lot of shit, while hiding his pain behind a mask of sarcasm and smart-ass remarks.
Tom Boudreaux, failed FBI agent, failed sheriff, is a new recruit for the agency. He firmly believes to be cursed, since his bad luck seems to rub off on a lot of people he comes in contact with. He's got a bad temper and the guts to stand up to Prophet, which he repeatedly does. Oh, and those fucking piercings... Two words: Jacob's Ladder. Damn, I developed an unhealthy obsession for those goddamn things. And the tattoos... HOT, HOT, HOT!
Prophet had suspected the tattoos. Now, up close and personal, he'd gotten an eyeful of the tribal-like markings, all in grayscale along Tom's shoulders and back and both biceps, with a few trailing down his forearms.
"You don't seem like the tattoo type, Tommy."
"What type do I seem like?"
"At first, the really annoying kind. But there might be hope for you."
Proph & Tommy are partnered and assigned to work on a case which awakens all kinds of ghosts from the men's pasts. They have to deal with their demons, while also trying not to kill each other. Prophet's flashbacks were really hard to follow and I still haven't understood his whole background. Also, my heart ached for him. And Tommy's incredible anger also flashes through, even though Proph manages that easily.
Despite their differences, at their core, Proph & Tommy are quite similar - they're angry men who refuse to rely on another person, who push people away, believe to work better alone and live according to those beliefs. They have dark secrets and have been dealt a great deal of pain. But they're a good fit for one another and they keep each other grounded.
"Together, they could be dangerous. Dangerous, but good, in more ways than one."
What's more, their sex scenes were SO FUCKING HOT! Considering the fact that they're both alpha males, the power exchange was constant, and the outcome was some rough and dirty, undeniably GREAT sex. And holy fuck, the biting...
"Way I figure it, if I'm forced to have a partner, might as well have one with benefits. If you're annoying me, fucking you will be more satisfying than punching you." Prophet grinned, then added slyly,
"And I could always punch you afterward."
He melted against Tommy, and Tommy goddamned knew it. And for once, Prophet didn't care, let Tom drag his clothes off until finally Tom whispered, "Want your hands on me."
It would never be like this with anyone else. It never had been before. Tonight, Prophet was ruining him for anyone else, and Tom wondered if Prophet knew it too.
Prophet was between his knees, playing his tongue along Tom's piercings. Tom pushed on his elbows to watch, a sharp gasp escaping when Prophet reached up and flicked a nipple ring hard.
So, here's the deal... I normally pick a favorite, but with Proph & Tommy, that's an impossible task and I gave up soon enough. These boys are AMAZING and I fell for them hard.
